TR visa

Can You Change From Visa Exemption to a Tourist Visa in Thailand?

If you enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption scheme and wish to stay longer, can you convert it to a Tourist Visa (TR) while you are already inside the country?
This article explains the rules clearly and provides the correct alternatives for extending your stay legally.

⬩➤ 1. Visa Exemption vs. Tourist Visa (TR): What’s the Difference? ▼

The Visa Exemption and the Tourist Visa (TR) are considered the same category of stay — both fall under “Tourist Visa” status.
The difference lies in how you obtain it and where it is issued.

Visa Exemption

Tourist Visa

  • Initial stay: 60 days (guaranteed).
  • You must apply for a tourist visa before entering Thailand.
  • Can be extended for 30 days.

⬩➤ 2. You cannot change a Visa Exemption to a Tourist Visa (TR) inside Thailand ▼

You cannot convert a Visa Exemption entry to a Tourist Visa (TR) within Thailand because both are considered the same visa category — tourism. Since they fall under the same type, a visa conversion is not permitted inside the country.

Why not?

  • Thai Immigration (Immigration Bureau) in Thailand is only authorized to extend your current stay, not issue a new visa.
  • Issuing a new Tourist Visa (TR) is the responsibility of a Thai embassy or consulate abroad, not Immigration inside Thailand.

➡️ For both Visa Exemption and Tourist Visa (TR), Immigration can grant a maximum 30-day extension only.

⬩➤ 3. What can you do if you want to stay in Thailand longer? ▼
  • A Non-O visa is a long-term visa. After your visa type is approved and changed to Non-O, you will receive 90 days of stay, and after that you can apply for a 1-year extension of stay.
  • Although you cannot convert a visa-free entry to a Tourist Visa (TR) while in Thailand, you may be able to change your status to certain other visa types, such as a Non-Immigrant O (Non-O) Visa for a Thai spouse/family or for retirement (based on common practice before 2025).
  • Since 2025, however, immigration practice has started to change. Although no written regulation has been issued, many people have reported that they entered Thailand visa-free but were no longer allowed to convert their status to a Non-Immigrant O (Non-O) Visa as they could in the past.

⬩➤ 4. Options for travelers who want to stay longer than 90 days as “tourists” ▼

If you want to stay longer while still remaining in tourist status, there are possible methods. However, they depend heavily on Immigration discretion, and there are risks you should consider carefully.

  • Before entering Thailand: Round 1 – Apply for a Tourist Visa (TR)
    • Apply for a Tourist Visa (TR) via the Thai e-Visa system
    • Stay 60 days + extend 30 days = 90 days
    • After 90 days, exit Thailand
    • Save your Visa Exemption entries for later use
  • Recommendation:
    • Stay outside Thailand for at least one week to demonstrate genuine travel intention.
    • Leaving and re-entering immediately may result in refusal of entry.
  • Round 2 – Use Visa Exemption (1st time)
    • Stay 60 days + extend 30 days = 90 days
  • Round 3 – Use Visa Exemption (2nd time) under the new rule (effective November 2025)
    • Stay 60 days + 7-day extension = 67 days

  • Total possible stay (approx.)
    • 247 days — around 8 months

⬩➤ 5. Important Considerations and Summary. ▼

Important Considerations

This method is based on real experiences, but it is not official guidance.

  • Immigration officers have the authority to refuse entry.
  • Anyone using this strategy should be fully aware of the risks involved.

If you want a stable and legally secure way to stay in Thailand, it is strongly recommended to consider switching to a Non-O visa or another long-term visa category.

Summary

  • A more stable solution is to switch to a long-term visa, such as the Non-O visa.
  • Entering Thailand with a Visa ExemptionYou cannot change it to a Tourist Visa (TR) inside Thailand.
  • Both Visa Exemption and TR are considered the same visa category, and Immigration in Thailand does not have the authority to issue a new Tourist Visa. As a tourist, the only extension option available is a 30-day extension, or using the strategy of exiting and re-entering the country — which carries certain risks.
