Money in account (400k–800k Baht) for Non-O Visa extension: Can You withdraw it? What should you do for next year?

The short answer is “Yes.” Once your visa extension is approved, you can withdraw the money from your account. However, you will have to repeat the exact same process every year. So, do not relax just because you got your first-year extension. Every year, you must deposit the required amount into your account at least 2 months before applying. If you withdrew the money, you must bring it back to complete the full amount again.

Depending on your financial situation, there are several ways to manage your money for a Non-O visa extension:

⬩➤ Required Bank Deposit Criteria
  • Retirement Visa: Must have a bank deposit of 800,000 Baht or a monthly income of 65,000 Baht.
    • Once approved for the extension, you must keep at least 400,000 Baht in your account for at least another 2 months.
    • If you use an income letter, some immigration offices still require you to open a Thai bank account and transfer your monthly income into it every month.
  • Marriage/Family Visa: Must have a bank deposit of 400,000 Baht or a monthly income of 40,000 Baht.

⬩➤ Why Is It Easier to Renew the Visa in the Following Years?

Renewing your visa in the following years is usually less complicated than the first year because:

  1. You already have a bank account (opening an account is often the hardest part in the first year).
  2. Important documents are already prepared, such as the Kor.Ror.22 form (for foreign marriage certificates), document translations, and official certifications.

There are only 2 main things you need to be careful about: “managing your money” and “counting the days.” Mark your calendar to remind yourself when your visa expires because you need to deposit the money into your account at least 2 months before applying.

Ways to Manage Your Deposit and Income

⬩➤ 1. The Safe Way: Keep the money in the account without withdrawing (Best and Easiest)
  • How to do it: Keep this account separate as a “security account” specifically for visa extensions. Do not use it for daily expenses. If you already have money to spend, just leave this total amount untouched in the account.
  • Recommended Tip: Choose a “Fixed Deposit Account” with a Thai bank (Immigration accepts both Savings and Fixed Deposit accounts). This allows your money to earn some interest instead of staying idle.
  • Benefit: This is the most convenient option. When it is time to renew your visa (you can apply up to 45 days in advance), simply request a guarantee letter and a 2-month bank statement from the bank and submit them right away. You do not need to worry about deposit timelines.

⬩➤ 2. The Full Withdrawal Way: Withdraw the money to use, then put it back, or use a combined method

How to do it: Once your extension is approved, you can withdraw the money immediately. You will have about 10 months to use or circulate that money. Then, 2 months before the next extension date, you must deposit the money back to meet the full amount.

What if you cannot bring back the full amount? You can use the “Combined Criteria (Bank Deposit + Income)” by calculating: (Monthly Income x 12 months) + Remaining Bank Deposit = Total required amount.

  • Example for Family Visa (400,000 Baht criteria): If you have a monthly income of 25,000 Baht (25,000 x 12 = 300,000 Baht), you only need to keep at least 100,000 Baht in your bank account to reach 400,000 Baht.
  • Example for Retirement Visa (800,000 Baht criteria):
    • If you have 200,000 Baht remaining in your account (short by 600,000 Baht), you need proof of a monthly income of 50,000 Baht (50,000 x 12 = 600,000 Baht). Combined, this equals 800,000 Baht.
    • If you have a monthly income of 40,000 Baht (40,000 x 12 = 480,000 Baht), you need to keep at least 320,000 Baht in your bank account.

Note: If you use income documents, they must be officially certified by your embassy (if they are in English, Immigration can read them). You should also check with your local Immigration office whether that income needs to be transferred into a Thai bank account.

⬩➤ 3. The Flexible Way: Withdraw slowly, only as much as needed

How to do it: Instead of withdrawing the entire sum at once, withdraw only the amount you really need to use.

Example: If you need to spend 50,000 Baht for a family visa case, withdraw just 50,000 Baht and leave 350,000 Baht in the account. Doing this makes money management much easier, and it is far simpler to add back 50,000 Baht to reach 400,000 Baht than replacing the whole amount.
