Applying for a Non-O Visa but Short on Bank Funds? What to Do?
For Spouse/Family and Retirement Visas

First, it is important to understand that the required bank balance set by Thai authorities is not a fee you actually have to pay. It is simply “show money” presented to the embassy or Immigration to prove your financial stability. As long as your balance meets the requirement, remains in your account for the required period, and all supporting documents are complete, your visa or extension will surely be approved.

⬩➤ Standard Financial Requirements for Non-O Visas

  • Non-O Spouse Visa (Thai Wife/Husband): Requires 400,000 THB in a bank account, or a minimum monthly income of 40,000 THB/month.
  • Non-O Retirement Visa: Requires 800,000 THB in a bank account, or a minimum monthly income of 65,000 THB/month.

⚠️ Important Warning: Extending a stay on a Non-O visa must be done “every single year.” Therefore, solving the problem of insufficient funds is only a short-term fix for the initial stage. In the long run, foreigners and their families need genuine financial readiness so that this money can be kept and used for annual extensions without having to repeatedly struggle with the same problem.

Solutions When You Don’t Have Enough Money in Your Account

⬩➤ Solution 1: Use Proof of Income (Pension) Instead of Bank Deposits

If you lack a lump sum in your account (for example, if you already spent money building a house or buying assets in Thailand) but still have a steady income that meets the requirement, you can present proof of income instead.

  • Practical Reality: Proving general employment income is difficult because documents must be certified by an embassy as genuine and untampered. As a result, most people who successfully use this method are “retirees receiving a pension” who hold clear pension certificates.
  • Additional Note: Even with a pension certificate, some local immigration offices in Thailand may still require you to open a Thai bank account and transfer pension funds into it for at least 2 months before submitting an extension application.

⬩➤ Solution 2: Have a Thai Spouse Act as a Sponsor (For Embassy Visa Applications Only)

If the foreigner’s funds are not ready—or if money was already fully transferred to the Thai spouse—you can use the Thai spouse’s bank account as a sponsor. However, there are key conditions to understand:

  • Can ONLY be used when applying for an online e-Visa at a Thai Embassy abroad: You submit the spouse’s bank statement alongside the marriage certificate to get an initial 90-day Non-O visa before traveling to Thailand.
  • Steps after entering Thailand: Once inside Thailand on the 90-day Non-O visa, you must open a Thai bank account in the foreigner’s own name. Then, withdraw funds from the spouse’s account and deposit them into the foreigner’s account to meet the full requirement (400,000 THB or 800,000 THB) to apply for the 1-year extension with Immigration.

(Note: You CANNOT use a sponsor when applying for the yearly extension at Immigration—it must be an account under the foreigner’s own name.)

⬩➤ Solution 3: Plan Savings & Switch Visa Types (If You Have Time to Prepare)

This is the most solid and basic method if you still have advance time before your visa application date:

  • Calculating Savings: For example, if you currently have 200,000 THB and want to apply for a retirement visa (which requires 800,000 THB), you are short by 600,000 THB. If you have 3 years left, you only need to save 200,000 THB per year, or roughly 16,000 – 17,000 THB per month.
  • Switching Visa Categories: If a foreigner is over 50 years old but does not have enough money for a retirement visa (800,000 THB), but is legally married to a Thai national, they can switch to a Non-O Spouse Visa, which requires only 400,000 THB instead.

⬩➤ Solution 4: Borrow Money from Someone You Trust (A Temporary Fix)

If time is running out and there are no other options, you can borrow funds from parents, relatives, or close acquaintances to deposit into your account for bank statements submitted to the embassy or Immigration. However, this method comes with heavy caveats:

  • Difficulties at Immigration: Embassies may only look at the closing balance on the application day, but when applying for a 1-year extension inside Thailand, Immigration rules state that the money must stay parked in the account for at least 2 months before applying. (For retirement visas, the full 800,000 THB must also remain in the account for 2 months after approval, and no less than 400,000 THB for another 3 months after that).
  • Duration of the Loan: In total, the money must remain in the account for 3 to 5 months, meaning the lender must be comfortable letting you hold the funds for a very long period.
  • NEVER Rent Money or Take Informal Loans: “Renting” money from agencies or taking informal loans is strongly discouraged. No agent will allow you to hold rented money for 2–3 months (they usually monitor you and withdraw the cash immediately after the statement is issued). This will fail Immigration checks and cause you to lose money for nothing.

⬩➤ Summary & Long-Term Advice

The solutions mentioned above are merely quick fixes to get your visa initially. Because foreigners must renew their extensions with the Thai Immigration Bureau every single year, please use your first 1-year stay to prepare and save up the real required amount. This ensures you can smoothly reuse your own funds to show Immigration officers in all the years to come.
