Guide to Planning a 90-Day Stay in Thailand on “Visa Exemption” and Key Immigration Rules

For foreign nationals entering Thailand under the Visa Exemption scheme which typically grants a 30-day stay who wish to extend their stay up to 3 months (90 days), here are the guidelines and essential Immigration Bureau rules to keep in mind.

⬩➤ Summary of How to Stay 90 Days in Thailand via Visa Exemption

Staying in Thailand for 90 days using visa exemptions requires two separate entries into the country:

First Entry (Total 60-Day Stay):

  • Enter Thailand under the 30-day Visa Exemption scheme.
  • Before the initial duration expires, apply for an extension of stay at a local Immigration Office to receive an additional 30 days.
  • Once the cumulative 60 days are completed, you must leave Thailand.

Second Entry (Total 30-Day Stay):

  • Re-enter Thailand to receive another 30-day Visa Exemption.
  • Applying for a second extension during this entry is not recommended.

Total stay across both entries equals exactly 90 days.

Important Rules & Cautionary Points for “30-Day Visa Exemption”

⬩➤ 1. Visa Exemption Is Capped at 2 Entries Per Year

Full-term 30-day Visa Exemption privileges can be used a maximum of 2 times per calendar year. Continuous “border bounces” every 30 days are strictly prohibited.

⬩➤ 2. Cumulative Exemption Limit Is 60 Days Per Year

Calculating two 30-day visa exemption entries results in a total allowance of 60 days per year (excluding extension days granted by Immigration).

  • If visiting on short trips, such as 15 days (approx. 2 weeks) per visit, a visitor might average up to 4 entries a year.
  • However, actual entry permissions remain entirely at the discretion of Immigration Officers. Frequent entry-and-exit records will likely result in questioning or warnings.

⬩➤ 3. Updated Extension Rules for the Second Entry (Effective Nov 2025)

First Entry Extension: Grants a full 30-day extension.

Second Entry Extension: Under updated Immigration rules (effective since November 2025), applying for an extension during the second visa exemption entry yields only a 7-day allowance, making it financially impractical relative to the application fee.

⬩➤ 4. A Tourist Visa cannot be applied for inside Thailand

Immigration Officers will issue a notice requiring you to leave the country and obtain a proper visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad before returning.

⬩➤ How to Calculate Days Correctly (Avoiding Overstay)

Calculating a 30-day stay does not simply mean selecting the same date in the following month. Calculation mistakes can lead to an illegal overstay and a damaged immigration record.

  • Incorrect Date Calculation Examples:
    • Jan 1 to Feb 1 = 32 days (Illegal Overstay)
    • Apr 1 to May 1 = 31 days (Illegal Overstay)
  • Correct Date Calculation Examples:
    • Apr 1 to Apr 30 = 30 days
    • Jul 15 to Aug 14 = 30 days

Tip: Always verify the entry stamp date inside the passport, as Immigration Officers clearly stamp the official permitted stay date.

⬩➤ Extension Process for the First Entry
  • Plan Ahead: Visit the Immigration Office 7 to 10 days prior to the expiration date.
  • Submit TM30 Accommodation Notification:
    • Before applying for an extension, the house owner or property host must officially register the traveler’s stay via the TM30 form (which can be completed online).
    • Failure to register a TM30 prior to visiting Immigration incurs a fine ranging from 800 to 2,000 THB.
  • Select the Correct Immigration Office: You must apply at the local Immigration Office corresponding to the address registered in the TM30 report.
  • Submit Documents and Fee: Submit the application form along with the required fee to receive the additional 30-day extension.

⬩➤ Instructions for Exiting and Re-entering Thailand

Upon completing 60 days during the first entry, you must physically cross an international border out of Thailand (traveling to other provinces within Thailand does not fulfill this requirement).

  • Wait Period Before Re-entry: Immediate same-day turnarounds are strongly discouraged. It is recommended to wait at least 3 to 4 days, or ideally 7 days before returning. Consider taking a short vacation in neighboring countries like Laos, Vietnam, or Malaysia (verify their respective visa entry requirements beforehand).
  • Visa Run Risks: Immigration strictly monitors back-to-back entries intended solely to prolong stay without a proper visa (Visa Runs). If officers determine that a traveler is not entering for genuine tourism purposes, entry may be refused, resulting in deportation.

⬩➤ Additional Recommendations for Long-Term Stays

Allow Time Between Visits: After completing 60 days on the first entry, it is best to return to your home country for a period before traveling back to Thailand.

Apply for a Tourist Visa (TR): If planning a continuous 3-month stay from the start, obtaining a Single Entry Tourist Visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad is a much safer and legally compliant option.

  • A Tourist Visa permits an initial stay of 60 days.
  • It can be extended for another 30 days at an Immigration Office in Thailand (1,900 THB fee) for a total of 90 days without needing to leave the country mid-way.
