(Non-O Retirement)

DTV (Destination Thailand Visa)

Want to stay in Thailand long-term without getting married, what visas do you need?

Foreigners who want to stay in Thailand long-term without marrying a Thai citizen have two main visa options to compare between younger and older groups: the DTV Visa and the Non-O Retirement Visa. Here are the details and requirements for each:

⬩➤ 1. Non-O Retirement Visa
Qualifications and Conditions: ▼
  • Must be 50 years old or older.
  • Must have a bank deposit equivalent to 800,000 Baht when applying for the visa from abroad (an overseas bank account can be used).
  • You can use the balance in the account on the application date without having to hold the money there continuously for several months like the DTV.

Application Process: ▼
  • Must apply online through the Thai E-Visa system via a Thai embassy abroad before traveling.
  • Cannot fly into Thailand first and then open a bank account or change the visa type directly in Thailand, because opening a Thai bank account requires a Non-Immigrant visa.

Stay Duration and Extensions: ▼
  • After entering Thailand with the visa, you can initially stay for 90 days.
  • Bring 800,000 Baht to open a bank account in Thailand and keep it there for 2 months.
  • Then, apply for an extension at the Immigration Bureau to stay for another year.
  • You can renew it every year without having to leave the country.
  • After receiving the extension, you must keep a balance of 400,000 Baht in the account continuously for 3 months.

Limitations: ▼
  • You must be 50 years old or older. If you are under 50, you will not qualify at all, no matter how much money you have.
  • You must renew the visa every year.
  • Working or making money in Thailand is strictly prohibited (you are not allowed to work or earn money from Thai people, such as opening a course to teach Thai locals). Therefore, this sum of money must be enough for you to live on without relying on local income.

⬩➤ 2. DTV (Destination Thailand Visa)
Qualifications and Conditions: ▼
  • No age limit; both young people and retirees can apply.
  • Must have clear proof of online work, such as being a company employee who can genuinely work from outside their home country with employer confirmation, or owning an online business that does not require working in an office in their home country (regular office jobs that require working in one’s home country or earning money from Thai people are not supported).
  • Must have a minimum deposit of 500,000 Baht in a bank account in their home country continuously for 3 full months.

Application Process: ▼
  • Must apply online through the Thai E-Visa system from one’s own country only.
  • Cannot enter Thailand on a free visa and then change the visa type.
  • Cannot apply for the visa while staying in Thailand.

Stay Duration and Extensions: ▼
  • The visa is valid for a total of 5 years, but each stay is limited to a maximum of 180 days.
  • When the time is up, you must leave the country or apply for another 180-day extension at the Immigration Bureau.
  • However, because it may require proof of activities or studies under Soft Power conditions, many people choose to travel in and out every 6 months instead.

Limitations: ▼
  • Cannot open a bank account in Thailand because the DTV visa is still classified under long-term tourism, requiring spending in Thailand to rely on other methods such as currency exchange or various applications.
  • Financial criteria and reviews are quite strict, requiring clear historical verification documents, and financial proof may be checked every time you re-enter the country.

⬩➤ Summary Recommendation

1. Non-O Retirement Visa

  • Must be 50 years old or older.
  • Must have 800,000 Baht in a bank account.
  • Working and earning money in Thailand is strictly prohibited.
  • Initially stays for 90 days, can be extended for 1 year (renewable every year).
  • Few documents required and easy to get approved.
  • Do not need to leave the country every 6 months.

2. DTV Visa (Destination Thailand Visa)

  • No age limit.
  • Must have 500,000 Baht in a bank account continuously for 3 months.
  • For online workers, taking soft power courses, or medical treatment.
  • Stays for 6 months per entry, can be extended for another 6 months once a year (valid for 5 years total).
  • Lots of complicated documents and hard to get approved.
  • The visa requires an extension or exit every 6 months.
