Thai E-Visa

United States Department of State

  • สิ่งที่ห้ามทำเด็ดขาด: เข้ามาอยู่ในประเทศไทยแล้วแอบยื่นขอวีซ่าจากข้างใน ระบบจะขึ้นเตือนชัดเจนว่า “You can’t apply when you are physically in Thailand” หากตัวอยู่ในไทยจะไม่สามารถยื่นได้

Tourist
To stay with Thai family more than 60 days
Retirement

Why was my Thai visa application rejected?

Currently, foreigners applying for a visa to enter Thailand must apply online through the Thai E-Visa system and must apply from outside Thailand only. You cannot apply while you are inside Thailand. If your visa was rejected or denied, check these 5 key points to find out why, along with solutions and important tips.

⬩➤ 1. Spelling Your Name/Surname Wrong (Most Important Issue)
  • Cause: Foreigners from some European countries (such as Germany, Norway, or Scandinavian countries) have special characters in their names. Examples include the letter A with a circle on top, the letter O with a diagonal slash, dots/dashes above or below letters, or connected names. The Thai visa website system does not support typing or pasting these special characters.
  • How to fix: You must spell your name using standard English letters. For example, an O with a diagonal slash should be changed to OE. The easiest and most accurate way is to look at the MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) strip. This is at the bottom of the first page of your passport (the page with your photo). The strip shows standard English letters that machines can read, so simply spell your name and surname as shown on that strip.

⬩➤ 2. Incomplete Documents or Incorrect Uploads
  • Cause: Some documents have multiple pages (such as bank statements), but the upload slot in the system allows only one file. If you upload only one page because you do not know how to convert files, your document will be incomplete.
  • How to handle: Thai embassies are usually generous and understanding. If your documents are incomplete, officers will send an email telling you to log back into the Thai E-Visa system to upload additional documents.
  • How to fix: Combine multiple photos into one file, or use an application to convert all pages into a single PDF file before uploading. If you are unsure, you can email the embassy to ask before clicking submit, because you cannot edit the application yourself once it is submitted.

⬩➤3. Incorrect Passport Information
  • Cause: Entering personal information that does not match your passport page, such as date of birth, passport issue date, expiration date, or the issuing authority/place of issue.
  • Things to watch out for: The passport issuing authority is written differently in each country. For example, Thailand uses Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the United States uses United States Department of State. Be careful not to enter just the country name; write it exactly as shown in your actual passport.
  • System checks: Currently, the visa application system shows warning pop-ups asking you to double-check your information twice before submitting, which helps reduce mistakes.

⬩➤ 4. Wrong Current Location
  • Rules: You must select the actual location where you are physically located at the moment you apply for the visa. For example, if you are in Germany, you must select Germany.
  • Applying from neighboring countries: You can apply for a Thai visa from countries neighboring Thailand (such as Laos or Malaysia), but you must set your Current Location to that country and actually be waiting in that country.
  • Strictly prohibited: Entering Thailand first and secretly applying for a visa from inside the country. The system displays a clear warning: “You can’t apply when you are physically in Thailand”. If you are physically in Thailand, you cannot apply.

⬩➤ 5. Selecting the Wrong Visa Type

You must select the correct main visa type and subcategory according to your purpose of travel, such as:

  • Tourist Visa: Select the Tourist category.
  • Non-Immigrant O Visa (Family/Spouse): Select To stay with Thai family more than 60 days (if staying less than 60 days, it falls under the Tourist Visa category).
  • Non-Immigrant O Visa (Retirement): Select the Retirement category.

⬩➤ Financial Requirements (For Non-O Visa)

If you apply for a Non-O visa, check that your bank balance or income meets the minimum requirements before submitting. You can use foreign bank accounts or foreign income documents:

  • Spouse or Family Visit: Must have at least 400,000 THB in a bank account or an income of at least 40,000 THB per month.
  • Retirement: Must have at least 800,000 THB in a bank account or an income of at least 65,000 THB per month. (It is recommended to have slightly more than the minimum amount, because coming up short by even a small amount can lead to rejection.)

⬩➤ What to Do If Your Visa Is Rejected?

If your visa gets rejected, do not worry because you can reapply right away. Simply fix the mistakes, such as correcting name spelling, updating financial documents, or choosing the correct visa category. Mainly, if your name spelling is correct and all required documents are complete, your Thai visa will certainly be approved.
