(Extension of stay)

(Passport):

TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card):

(Tourist Visa):

(Non-O Spouse):

(Non-O Family):

(Non-O Retirement):

What Documents Do Foreigners Need to Prepare When Entering Thailand?

Here is a summary of the recommended documents to carry when entering Thailand. These documents will help prove your intentions and solve issues if you are questioned by Immigration. Some items are mandatory, while others are good to have on hand for extension of stay applications.

⬩➤ 1. General Documents (For All Foreign Travelers)
Passport:

Your passport should have at least 6 months of validity remaining from the date you arrive in Thailand.

Visa:

Please check your visa eligibility beforehand to see if your passport qualifies for a visa exemption and for how many days.

You can check the list of visa-exempt countries for Thailand here.

⬩➤ TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card):

The online arrival registration system that everyone must complete before entering Thailand. It can be filled out up to 3 days prior to travel and is completely free of charge (if a site charges a fee, it is a fake website).

⬩➤ Proof of Accommodation in Thailand:
  • General tourists should present a hotel booking confirmation.
  • Visitors staying at a Thai resident’s home should prepare digital photos on their phone, such as the host’s Thai ID card, the house registration book (Tabien Baan), and a photo taken with the host to prove the relationship.

⬩➤ Proof of Travel (Flight Tickets):
  • Short-Term Stay (Tourist / Visa Exemption): Must hold an outward bound ticket leaving Thailand (a return ticket or a ticket to a neighboring country).
  • Long-Term Stay (Non-O): A one-way ticket is acceptable, as long-term stays exceed the advance booking limits of airline booking systems.

⬩➤ Others:
  • Proof of Financial Means: Short-term visitors on tourist visas or visa exemptions may need to show proof of funds (cash) if requested by Immigration.
    • 20,000 THB / person
    • 40,000 THB / family
  • Personal Documents: Carry personal IDs from your home country, a driver’s license, or employment verification documents as extra proof of identity.

⬩➤ 2. Group-Specific Documents
Visa Exemption and Tourist Visa:

Important Note: Travelers entering and exiting Thailand multiple times in the same year (especially 2 to 3 times or more), or those who stayed longer than 15 days on previous visits, face a higher risk of being questioned by Immigration.

Additional Preparation:

  • Clear proof of accommodation (ID card/house registration of the Thai host and a photo together).
  • Outbound travel ticket (in urgent cases, a budget ticket to a neighboring country can be purchased on the spot to present to Immigration).
  • If you hold a tourist visa but are also eligible for visa exemption, please present your tourist visa to the immigration officer first. This ensures that the officer correctly stamps your passport under the tourist visa category (otherwise, they may grant you visa exemption entry instead).

Non-O Spouse Visa:
  • Marriage Certificate: If registered in Thailand, bring the original Thai certificate. If registered abroad, bring the original document for legal authentication in Thailand.
  • Personal Documents: Passport, divorce certificate (if applicable), and name/surname change certificate (if applicable).
  • Proof of Residence: Thai ID card and house registration of the Thai spouse (if staying at another person’s residence, bring the host’s documents as well) for TM.30 notification.
  • Proof of Financial Means: Income statements or bank balance records to apply for an extension of stay.

⬩➤ Non-O Family Visa:

(Parents or children of Thai nationals)

  • Proof of Relationship: Child’s birth certificate or official documents confirming biological relationship.
  • Proof of Residence: ID card and house registration of the Thai relative you are living with.
  • Proof of Financial Means: Same criteria as the Spouse Visa (e.g., 400,000 Baht bank balance requirement or income statements).

⬩➤ Non-O Retirement Visa:
  • Proof of Financial Means: Latest income statement (not less than 65,000 Baht per month) or funds prepared for transfer into a Thai bank account according to criteria.
  • Documents for Yellow House Registration Book (Tabien Baan for Foreigners): Passport (authenticated at your embassy) and the host’s documents to contact the local district office, which will be used to open a Thai bank account.

⬩➤ Overall Summary
  • Short-Term Travelers (Tourist / Visa Exemption): Focus on preparing outbound tickets, proof of accommodation, and financial proof to present to Immigration if questioned.
  • Long-Term Travelers (Non-O): Generally screened during the initial visa application process, so issues at the checkpoint are rare. However, bring all key documents to apply for an extension of stay within Thailand.
