I have a 90-day Non-O visa, but I only want to extend my stay for another 30 days. Is that possible?
Normally, a Non-O visa can be extended for 1 year, but if you only stay for another 30 days, nobody will complain because the extension fee is the same at 1,900 THB. However, there is no option to request a 30-day extension with a lower fee. If you don’t want to pay the extension fee, you can choose to exit and re-enter using a visa exemption (Free Visa).
If you plan to visit Thailand regularly throughout the year, the recommended method is to apply for a 1-year extension along with a Re-entry Permit so you can travel in and out and stay for whatever duration you prefer.
⬩➤ Basic Conditions for a 1-Year Non-O Visa Extension
- Marriage Visa: Requires 400,000 THB deposited in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before applying. Once approved, you can withdraw the money.
- Retirement Visa (Age 50+): Requires 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account for 2 months before applying. After approval, you must keep at least half of it (400,000 THB) in the account for another 3 months.
- Family Dependent: Uses the same financial rule as the marriage visa, but requires additional documents such as a Thai child’s birth certificate.
Options for Managing Your Length of Stay
⬩➤1. Emergency or Unavoidable Circumstances
If you need a short stay without preparing for a 1-year extension, you can visit an immigration office to ask for permission on a case-by-case basis by presenting supporting documents, such as:
- Medical Reasons: Sudden illness preventing travel back home, requiring a doctor’s appointment note or medical certificate.
- Document Delays: Delays in preparing financial proof or income certificates from an embassy, making it impossible to hold funds in the bank for 2 months before the visa expires.
- Unavoidable Travel Issues: Flight problems caused by the airline. (Note: Approval depends entirely on the discretion of the immigration officer at each office, and official fees may apply.)
⬩➤ 2. Combining Non-O Visa and Visa Exemption / Free Visa (For 4–6 Month Stays)
If you do not want to open a Thai bank account or freeze your funds, you can travel out of Thailand and re-enter using a visa exemption:
- 4-Month Plan: Stay for the full 90 days on your Non-O visa -> Travel to a neighboring country for 2–3 days -> Return to Thailand using a 30-day Free Visa.
- 5-Month Plan: Enter using the Free Visa in the second round -> Extend the Free Visa for another 30 days at an immigration office.
- 6-Month Plan (180 Days): Use Non-O for 90 days -> Exit and re-enter on a Free Visa + 30-day extension (60 days total) -> Exit and re-enter on another Free Visa (30 days), equaling 180 days total.
⬩➤ 3. 1-Year Extension + Multiple Re-entry Permit (Most Convenient Long-Term Option)
If you are okay with opening a bank account and depositing money 2 months in advance, applying for a 1-year extension is the most flexible choice:
- Method: Apply for a 1-year extension and get a Multiple Re-entry Permit right away (cost: 3,800 THB).
- Pros: You can enter and leave Thailand as many times as you like without losing your visa status. You can stay for 15 days, 30 days, 4 months, or the whole year per trip, without needing to apply for a new visa every time.
- Cons: You must deposit the required funds into a Thai bank account 2 months before your annual extension every year.
