Re-entry permit?
Re-entry permit
Re-entry permit
(Passport)

Holding a Non-O Visa and Wanting to Travel Abroad: Will Your Visa Expire?
For anyone holding a Non-O Visa who plans to travel outside Thailand to visit or run errands in neighboring countries, the most important thing to remember is: “Never leave Thailand without getting a Re-entry permit first.”
The term Re-entry permit is extremely important. You should memorize it, post it on your fridge, set it as your phone background, or stick it on your wall. If you accidentally leave the country without getting a Re-entry permit beforehand, your Non-O Visa will expire and be canceled immediately. When you return, you will only receive a regular tourist visa-exempt stamp instead, losing your original visa rights, which is a huge waste.
⬩➤ Why Does a Non-O Visa Expire When Leaving the Country?
Most Non-O visas (such as Marriage, Family, or Retirement, except OA and OX) are Single entry. This means you can enter Thailand only once.
Because of this, a Re-entry permit is not a visa. It is an official permission to leave and return to Thailand without losing your current visa.
In Thailand’s visa system, Multiple entry visas (such as Non-OA or OX) cost more and require a lot of paperwork. On the other hand, Non-O visas require less paperwork and are much easier to get. That is why they are set as Single entry by default. If you want to travel in and out of the country, you must apply for a Re-entry permit separately at Immigration.
⬩➤ Where to Get a Re-entry Permit and Fee Structure
The period of stay allowed in Thailand always adheres strictly to the original visa expiration date.
- Example: If your Non-O Visa starts on January 1st and expires on March 29th (a 90-day period), after getting a Re-entry permit and traveling abroad, your visa expiration date remains March 29th.
- Whether you are in your initial 90-day period or in an annual extension (1 year), you can apply for a Re-entry permit during both periods.
⬩➤ Who Needs a Re-entry Permit?
1. People Who Travel In and Out of Thailand Frequently
You do not need to be a permanent resident in Thailand to benefit from this. People who fly back and forth between Thailand and other countries can also use this approach. Understanding this system allows you to maintain the right to stay in Thailand long-term through continuous extensions combined with Re-entry permits.
For those who come to Thailand for several months at a time and then return home, or come every other month, getting a Re-entry permit (especially a Multiple entry) prevents you from forgetting and lets you travel conveniently throughout your visa duration. This is much more worthwhile than relying on visa-exempt entries, which now face increasing restrictions.
2. People Holding Long-Term (Annual) Non-O Visas
This group strictly needs it. Even if you rarely travel abroad, the fact that you “rarely travel” is precisely why many people forget to get a Re-entry permit, causing their visas to expire.
Sometimes unexpected events happen—such as needing to visit home urgently or a spouse inviting you to visit a nearby country (like Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Japan). If you leave without a Re-entry permit, your hard-earned long-term visa will be lost immediately. It is recommended to get a Multiple entry permit just in case, because a Single entry permit requires you to specify exact entry and exit dates on the application form.
⬩➤ Who Might Not Need One?
- People whose Non-O Visa is close to expiring: For instance, if you have only 1 month left and already plan to apply for a visa extension, you can wait until the extension process is complete and then apply for a Re-entry permit at the same time.
- People planning to stay outside Thailand for a long time (e.g., more than 6 months): When calculated, paying 3,800 THB for a Multiple Re-entry permit might be more expensive than applying for a brand-new Non-O Visa from a Thai embassy abroad (which costs around 2,600 – 3,000 THB). However, you must factor in the time needed to prepare documents and re-apply for the visa.
Additional Note: For those who hold a 90-day Non-O Visa and do not apply for an annual extension (due to conditions like opening a bank account or seasoning money for 2 months), you can use the method of traveling in and out to re-apply for a 90-day Non-O Visa continuously. Subsequent applications are often approved faster because you already have a history of holding the visa.
⬩➤ Documents Required for a Re-entry Permit
- Passport
- TM.8 Form (recommended to download from the Immigration website and fill out in advance)
- Photo size 4×6 cm
- TM.6 and TM.30 Forms (required whenever contacting Immigration)
