Can You Get Married at a Thai Embassy Abroad? Rules & Required Documents
For Thai-foreign couples living abroad who want to register their marriage under Thai law at a Thai Embassy, here is a simple guide on the rules, required documents, and process.
⬩➤ Benefits of Registering at the Embassy ▼
- No Thai Translation Needed: You can use local language documents directly, saving the hassle and cost of translating and certifying documents in Thailand.
- Apply for Non-O Visa Right Away: Once you receive your Thai Marriage Certificate, the foreign spouse can apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa (Marriage) online via the e-Visa system without having to travel to Thailand first.
- (Note: Guidelines based on the Royal Thai Embassy in Brussels, Belgium. Specific requirements may vary slightly by country, so please check with your local Thai Embassy).
⬩➤ Important Requirement (Read First!) ▼
- Both partners must reside in that country: You can only register your marriage at a Thai Embassy if both of you have official residence/house registration in that country. (If you are visiting on a short-term tourist visa, you cannot do this and must register at a district office in Thailand instead).
- At least one partner must hold Thai nationality: This service is not available if both partners are foreigners.
- It is a Thai legal marriage registration: This is NOT a marriage registration under the local laws of that country.
⬩➤ Required Documents ▼
1. Foreign Partner
- Certificate of Single Status: Issued by local authorities (valid for no more than 6 months) and certified by that country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (No Thai translation needed—you can use local language documents).
- National ID Card

2. Thai Partner
- Thai Passport (valid)
- Thai House Registration (Tabien Baan)
- Foreign House Registration / Proof of Overseas Residence
3. Witnesses (2 People)

- If previous spouse passed away: Death Certificate + Single Status Certificate stating: “Has not remarried since the death of the spouse.”
- If name/surname was changed: Name/Surname Change Certificate.
