Extension of Stay in Thailand

Starting in 2025, the Immigration Bureau will enforce stricter rules, especially for foreigners who frequently enter and exit Thailand or stay long-term using visa exemption or tourist visas.

Visa exemption and tourist visas can now be extended only twice per year:

• 1st Extension: Up to 30 days (same as before) → total maximum stay 90 days
• 2nd Extension: Only 7 days (reduced from before) → total maximum stay 67 days

✅ Maximum total stay in Thailand per year = 157 days

Frequent Entries and Exits (Visa Run)

Stricter rules apply as follows:

• No same-day entry and exit: You cannot leave Thailand and re-enter on the same day.
• Limited number of entries: If you use the visa exemption more than 2 times per year without a credible reason, you may be denied entry.
• A visa change may not be permitted if there is a history of frequent entries and exits to Thailand. However, in cases where the person has only recently entered Thailand for the first or second time within the year, Immigration may still consider allowing a visa change but will be stricter.
• In many situations, Immigration will recommend to apply for an online visa through a Thai embassy or consulate before traveling to Thailand.

Recommendations for Those Wishing to Stay Long-Term in Thailand
To stay longer without issues, it is advisable to apply for a proper visa, such as a Non-O visa (retirement/spouse) or the new DTV.
