First-Time Visa Application: Mistakes to Avoid & How to Get Approved
This is for anyone applying for an overseas visa for the first time and wondering what areas need fixes or extra care. The goal is to pass on your first attempt without crying later because you prevented issues before submitting.
⬩➤ Summary of 3 Main Points to Watch Out For:
- Money: Do not deposit a large sum of money all at once. Your finances must grow naturally.
- Consistency of Documents: Everything must match, including travel dates and your purpose for traveling.
- Proof of Returning to Thailand: You must make the officer believe that you will definitely return home.
⬩➤ 1. Money (The Most Important Point)
If you fail this point, your application ends immediately with a rejection, no matter how good your other documents are. You must have enough money, but it depends on the visa type and does not always have to be your own money:
- Visiting Visa: You can use the host’s money.
- Tourist Visa (Paying Yourself): You just need enough money that grows naturally, not money from “account dressing”.
What is Account Dressing? ▼
It means you did not have enough money originally, so you quickly deposit a large sum of money to make your account look rich. What you must never do is dump a large sum of money, rent money, or fake bank statements. Officers focus heavily on this; if they see unusual money deposits, they will reject your visa immediately without mercy.
How to Fix This: If you know you do not have enough money and pay for yourself, prepare in advance by running your bank account to gradually build up money until it is sufficient before applying.
However, if someone else pays for you (such as a partner, relative, or friend), you can have 0 Baht in your account. This is because 95% of countries look mainly at the host’s money.
⬩➤ 2. Consistency of All Documents
All details in your documents must match. For example, in a tourist visa application:
- Travel Dates in the Application Form: The start date is the “date you arrive at the destination country,” not the date you leave Thailand. (For instance, if you leave Thailand on the 1st and arrive at your destination on the 2nd, write the 2nd).
- Return Date: Be careful with layovers (transit). If you transit through a country that requires a visa (such as Frankfurt, Germany), the date you depart that transit stop must match your visa expiration date. If you transit the next day, you might stay past your visa expiration date.
- Travel Plan and Hotel Bookings: Entry and exit dates must match your application form. Hotel bookings must cover every night, even nights spent traveling long distances on buses or boats. Use refundable hotel bookings and do not cancel them until you know your visa result.
In the Case of a Visiting Visa ▼
- Choose the Right Category: If you visit a partner in Norway and they take you to travel in France afterward, you must still choose “Visit Family or Friends,” not “Tourism”.
- Proof of Relationship: Even if you do not have money in your account, you must still submit your bank statement. You also need strong proof of relationship, such as photos together (main document), screenshots during video calls, or official government documents if you are relatives. If officers do not believe the relationship, they will not look at the host’s documents and will reject the visa immediately.
⬩➤ 3. Proving You Will Definitely Return to Thailand
Officers often reject visas with the reason “afraid the applicant will not return home”. You must prepare extra evidence:
- For Tourist Visas (Self-Funded): Focus on your job and the origin of your money. If you use savings, prove where those savings came from (such as regular job income or inheritance).
- For Visiting Visas or Unemployed Applicants: Prove your ties and duties in Thailand, such as owning assets or land, or having family duties like caring for children (attach child’s birth certificate), caring for parents (attach photos, parent ID cards, doctor certificates), or property ownership documents under your name.
For visiting visas, officers mostly focus on the host’s documents and guarantee. For tourist visas, they focus heavily on the applicant’s job, assets, and ties in Thailand.
⬩➤ 4. Additional Warnings to Avoid Rejection
- Never Use Fake Documents: Do not hire anyone to make fake bank statements, make fake employment letters (such as getting a former employer to sign when you no longer work there, which is easy to spot by checking salary deposits in bank statements), or cancel hotel bookings before knowing the result. Officers take about 3 weeks to review and check the truthfulness of these documents.
- Do Not Buy Everything Before Knowing the Result: Especially flight tickets. Many people buy tickets early because they fear high prices, but if the visa is rejected, that money is lost completely. Use only a “Flight Itinerary/Reservation” that does not require paying for a real ticket.
- Do Not Apply Too Close to Your Travel Date: If a country takes 3 weeks to process, but you apply only 10 days before travel, officers will not finish in time. As a result, your visa might be issued after your travel date, wasting your allowed stay. Apply at least 1 month in advance.
- More Documents Does Not Mean Higher Chances: Documents must be numerous in an efficient and relevant way. For business owners, you do not need to translate 10-page land lease or purchase contracts; translating just the first page showing your name is enough.
