Giving Birth and Staying Long-Term in Thailand: Which Visa Should You Apply For?
(For unmarried Thai and foreign couples)
For international-Thai couples (whether the mother is foreign and the father is Thai, or the father is foreign and the mother is Thai), if you want to live long-term in Thailand after your child is born, the visa you need to apply for is the Non-Immigrant O Visa (Family / Supporting a Thai Child).
⬩➤ 1. The Crucial First Step: A Thai Birth Certificate ▼
When applying for a Non-O Family Visa, the Thai Birth Certificate is the most important document. Without it, you cannot apply for this visa type.
- Giving birth in Thailand is highly recommended: You can obtain a Thai birth certificate immediately after delivery, making the process quick and convenient.
- If you give birth abroad: You will first receive a birth certificate from that country and must apply for a Thai birth certificate later, which adds extra steps.
- Bottom line: If your plan is to live primarily in Thailand, coming to give birth in Thailand saves time and avoids hassle.
⬩➤ 2. Preparing in Advance: The 400,000 THB Financial Requirement ▼
Meeting the financial criteria is one of the most common obstacles when applying to stay with your child in Thailand. There are two options available:
- A balance of 400,000 THB in a bank account (This is the most practical and commonly used option).
- A monthly income of 40,000 THB (Harder to prove, and mostly applicable to retirees from developed nations).
Key Facts About the 400,000 THB Requirement:
- It is a proof of funds, not a payment: You do not pay this money to the Thai government. It simply proves that you have sufficient financial means to support your child.
- How to prepare: Start saving before or during pregnancy. Both partners can pool their money together or temporarily borrow funds from close relatives to build up the required statement.
- Important warning: Do NOT rent funds or use sketchy agents. This carries high risks, and you will need to renew this visa every year.
3. Step-by-Step Application Process
You cannot initiate this visa process from inside Thailand (Thai Immigration generally does not allow switching to this visa type internally). You must start from abroad.
⬩➤ Step 1: Apply from Outside Thailand ▼
- Submit an online application via the Thai E-Visa website, selecting the Thai Embassy in the foreign parent’s country of origin/residence.
- Submit your child’s Thai Birth Certificate along with a foreign bank statement showing at least 400,000 THB (for this step, the money can be deposited all at once before generating the statement).
- Once approved, you will receive an initial 90-day visa via email to enter Thailand.
⬩➤ Step 2: Actions Upon Arrival in Thailand ▼
- Open a Thai Bank Account: Use your 90-day Non-O Visa and your child’s Thai birth certificate to open a bank account in Thailand (the account must be solely in the foreign parent’s name).
- Transfer Funds: Deposit or transfer the 400,000 THB into your new Thai bank account.
- Season the Money for 2 Months: The 400,000 THB must remain continuously in your Thai bank account for at least 2 full months.
- Apply for the Extension of Stay: After 2 months, update your bank passbook, request a 2-month bank statement, and obtain a bank guarantee letter to apply for a long-term extension with Thai Immigration.
⬩➤ 4. Annual Renewals ▼
- Once Immigration approves your extension, you will be granted a 1-year stay in Thailand.
- You must repeat the extension process once a year, every year.
- Crucial Note: Keep this 400,000 THB accessible for renewals. If you fail to keep the money in the account for the required 2 months prior to your extension date, your visa will expire, requiring you to leave Thailand and restart the entire 90-day E-Visa process from abroad.
