Reasons Why Opening a Bank Account on a Visa-Free Entry Is Difficult

Most Thai banks require account holders to have a long-term residence status in Thailand to prevent legal risks and money laundering. Recently, due to increasing problems with scammers and mule accounts, authorities have requested banks to implement stricter account-opening procedures.
Therefore, if a foreigner enters Thailand on a tourist visa or visa exemption (visa-free entry), banks usually refuse to open an account.

Common Documents Required for Opening a Thai Bank Account

• Passport
• Long-term visa (Non-immigrant Visa “O” — for marriage, retirement, education, etc.)
• Letter of Residence issued by the Immigration Office (not TM30)
• Proof of address in Thailand, such as a rental contract, utility bill, yellow house registration book, or pink ID card
• Online TM6 (TDAC) form and TM30 form
