Required Documents

1. Passport with Valid Non-Immigrant Visa (Non-O, Non-B, Non-ED, etc.)

2. Proof of Residence in Thailand

• Letter of Residence Information issued by Thai Immigration
• OR Thai House Registration (Tabien Baan)
• OR Work Permit showing your residential address

3. Medical Certificate

Issued by a hospital or clinic in Thailand

• Must be issued within the last 30 days
• States that you are physically fit to drive

4. Photos

5. (Optional) Foreign Driving License or IDP

• Foreign driving license, or International Driving Permit (IDP)
• → You may be exempt from the written test and driving test, depending on the province.

Application Process

1. Book an Appointment

• Appointments for foreigners must be booked through: DLT Smart Queue App

2. Attend the Appointment

• At the Department of Land Transport office you selected.

3. Training Session

• Attend the mandatory training on Thai road rules and safety.

4. Physical Ability Tests

• Reaction test
• Peripheral vision test
• Color recognition test

5. Written Test

• 50 multiple-choice questions
• Must score at least 45/50

6. Driving Test

• Required only if you do not have a valid foreign license/IDP.

Why Tourist Visa Holders Cannot Apply for a Thai License While Tourists Are Driving Motorcycles Everywhere

• Driving in Thailand and applying for a Thai driving license are two different things.
• Tourists CAN drive if they use: A valid foreign driving license, or An International Driving Permit (IDP)
• If they do not have either → they are not legally allowed to drive.

Then why do some tourists still manage to get a Thai driving license?

Because of differences in local interpretation and officer discretion:

1. Different rules in different provinces

• Some provinces are strict but some tourist areas are more lenient
• Some officers may not strictly check visa type.

2. Proof of Residence is easy to obtain

• Anyone can request a Letter of Residence Information from Immigration,
• even if they are not long-term residents.
• Some offices accept it without checking visa category closely.

3. Some tourists have long enough stay

• If someone extends a visa exemption or tourist visa and has 30+ days remaining,
• some provincial offices may approve the application.
