การจดทะเบียนสมรสในไทย ไม่ได้ทำให้คนไทยได้สถานภาพใด ๆ ในประเทศของคู่สมรสทันที

หากต้องการนำทะเบียนสมรสไทยไปใช้ในประเทศของคู่สมรส ก็ต้องผ่านขั้นตอน

Another important point is that:

Registering a marriage in Thailand does not automatically grant the Thai spouse any legal status in the foreign spouse’s country.

If you want to use the Thai marriage certificate in the spouse’s country, the document usually needs to go through:

• Authentication by a consulate or embassy

For example, registering a marriage in:

• The United States
• The United Kingdom
• Australia

Marriage registration abroad may be done by:

Advantages

In many cases, the foreign spouse does not need to prepare many documents.

Instead, the Thai spouse usually needs to prepare documents, such as:

• A certificate of single status
• Other supporting documents

These documents must also go through:

• Certification of the original documents
• Translation
• Legalization at the Thai consulate or embassy

A major advantage is that the marriage certificate can be used to apply for:

• A spouse visa
• A national visa
• A residence permit
• Or a Green Card (for the United States)

This allows the Thai spouse to live abroad long-term.

Disadvantages

In many countries, the process takes a long time.

For example:

• Some European countries may take several months
• The United States process may take around a year or more

Overall, the procedure can be much more complicated than registering in Thailand.

If you later want to use the marriage in Thailand, for example to apply for a Thai spouse visa, the foreign marriage certificate must go through:

• Certification of the original document
• Translation into Thai
• Legalization at the Thai Department of Consular Affairs

After that, it must be registered in Thailand as a recognized foreign marriage (Kor Ror 22) at a district office.

In addition, the costs and paperwork are usually higher than registering a marriage in Thailand.

No matter where the marriage is registered, a marriage is generally recognized internationally.

However, if you want to use the marriage certificate in another country, the document usually must go through these steps:

• Certification of the original document
• Translation
• Consular legalization or embassy authentication

before it can be officially used in that country.

If the goal is to apply for a short-term visa just to visit, not to move permanently, such as:

• Schengen visa
• United States visa
• UK visa
• Australian visa
• Canadian visa

It usually does not matter whether the marriage was registered in Thailand or in the spouse’s country.

Having a marriage certificate can still help strengthen the visa application.

If applying for a visa to an EU country, the embassy visa fee may also be waived.

In some cases, registering the marriage in Thailand first can later be used to apply for long-term visas abroad.

If the couple has been married for the required period before approval, the Thai spouse may receive a Green Card for long-term residence after entering the United States.

A marriage registered in Thailand can be used to apply for a long-term spouse visa to live in those countries.
