Can You Get a Non-O Visa to Stay Long-term in Thailand Without a Thai Bank Account?

Staying in Thailand long-term without ever leaving can be difficult. A key requirement to extend your stay is having a Thai bank account. Even if you use your income instead of a money deposit, many immigration offices still require you to open a bank account to transfer that income into

⬩➤ 1. If You Don’t Want to Open a Bank Account
  • You don’t want to lock up your money: You can use proof of income instead, such as a retirement or pension income. You can get this verified by your embassy in Thailand or do it from your home country, then submit it to Immigration (Immigration Bureau). However, some Immigration offices may still require you to open a Thai bank account and transfer the money in for about two months before applying for an extension. Since monthly pension income is a small amount, it is not a huge sum like the money required for marriage or family (400,000 Baht) or retirement (800,000 Baht).
  • You refuse to open an account for personal reasons: Staying long-term without ever leaving is impossible, but you can adapt by entering and exiting the country multiple times instead. You apply for a Non-O visa from a Thai embassy abroad (where you can use your home country’s bank account for this step), which gives you the first 90 days. When those 90 days are up, you must leave and re-enter. For people with a Thai marriage certificate, central immigration allows a 2-month extension (combined with a visa exemption) only once. People without a marriage certificate get the standard visa exemption, and can only extend for 7 days. Alternatively, you can stay away for several months and then apply for a new Non-O visa to come back. Re-applying later on will be faster than the first time because you already have a history of getting the visa.

⬩➤ 2. If You Want to Open an Account, but the Bank Won’t Let You

Banks have strict policies to prevent money laundering and scammers. First, you must have a Non-Immigrant visa (such as Non-O for marriage, retirement, or family) to open an account. Having just a Non-O visa is not enough; you also need a document issued by the Thai government, depending on your visa type.

  • For spouses or families: You use a Thai marriage certificate or a child’s birth certificate. If you have a foreign marriage certificate, you must get the original certified, translated into Thai, get the translation certified, and go to the district office to get a Khor.Rhor.22 form to submit together.
  • For retirement: Instead of a marriage certificate, you need proof of residence issued by the government. This is not just a rental agreement. The easiest way to try first is a Letter of Residence Information from Immigration. People often misunderstand that a TM.30 form is a residence certificate, but it is not—the TM.30 is required first, and then you take that TM.30 to Immigration to have them issue a residence certificate. Or, you can use a yellow house registration book. Banks may also ask for a fourth document belonging to the foreigner, such as a driver’s license.

⬩➤ Additional Tips for Opening a Bank Account
  • Bank staff at some branches might not know about the Non-O visa and might be confused about visa types.
  • It is recommended to call and ask or chat online with the bank (such as the green bank, which has clear information) in advance before visiting a branch.
  • If a branch makes things too difficult or doesn’t understand, try a different branch, or choose a branch in a tourist city where foreigners open accounts often.
  • Once you enter Thailand and have 90 days, you should start the process right away during the first month. Some people wait two weeks and then start, only to find out they run out of time.
