(Visa Exemption)

(Tourist Visa)

What’s the difference between entering Thailand visa-free and getting a tourist visa?

Many people are familiar with foreign nationals entering Thailand under the Visa Exemption scheme, to the point that they might forget that the Tourist Visa option also exists. Both methods have distinct differences, conditions, and details to keep in mind, as outlined below:

    ⬩➤ Basic Summary of Differences

    Visa Exemption

    • Duration: Stay in Thailand for up to 30 days, with an option to extend for another 30 days at an Immigration Bureau office, totaling 60 days.
    • Application: No advance visa application is required; entry is permitted immediately upon arrival.

    Tourist Visa

    • Duration: Initial stay allowed for 60 days, with an option to extend for another 30 days, totaling 90 days.
    • Application: Must be applied for online through a Thai embassy or consulate abroad prior to travel; cannot be applied for within Thailand.

⬩➤ Conditions and Limitations of “Visa Exemption”
    Eligible Countries Only:

Currently available to approximately 60–70 countries, not open to every country worldwide.

Visa Runs Are No Longer as Easy as Before

Entering and exiting Thailand repeatedly to reset the allowed stay (e.g., staying for 30 days, leaving to a neighboring country, and re-entering) is now very difficult or practically impossible.

    ⬩➤ Entry Limits:

Immigration regulations stipulate that if a traveler stays near the maximum duration (around 3–4 weeks) and leaves only to re-enter shortly after, this can be done a maximum of 2 times per year. Subsequent attempts may result in entry refusal, as it is viewed as an attempt to reside illegally without obtaining a proper visa.

    ⬩➤ Extension Rules:

On the first entry, travelers receive 30 days and can extend for another 30 days (totaling 60 days). However, if they leave and re-enter a second time, they will receive 30 days, but under Immigration regulations (as of November 2025), the extension on this second entry is reduced to just 7 days. This brings the maximum effective stay using Visa Exemption in a single run to around 90 days total across two entries.

⬩➤ Managing Multiple Short Visits :

    (60 Days Total Per Year)

Excluding the extension options, the basic 60-day visa exemption allowance can be split into shorter trips, such as:

    • Visiting for 1 week (7 days) at a time, about 7–8 times per year.
    • Visiting for 15 days at a time, about 4 times per year.
    • Visiting for the full allowed duration, up to 2 times per year.
    • Generally, Immigration considers visitors staying an average of 15 days or less per trip to be typical tourists. Staying longer than 15 days or making frequent re-entries may attract extra scrutiny.
    • Note: This is an estimate based on personal experience, not an official Immigration Bureau rule. There is no specific regulation requiring this

⬩➤ Highlights of the “Tourist Visa”
    • Open to All Nationalities: Foreigners from countries not eligible for Visa Exemption can apply for a Tourist Visa to enter Thailand.
    • Longer Stay Duration: Grants an initial 60 days upon entry, plus an option to extend for another 30 days (totaling 90 days), without the reduced extension restrictions applied to second-time Visa Exemption entries.
    • Multiple Applications: Can be applied for more than once per year, provided there is a gap of several months between applications to demonstrate genuine tourism intent rather than permanent residence. For example, applying early in the year (staying up to 90 days), returning home to work for several months, and applying again late in the year (staying up to 90 days) allows for a total stay of up to 180 days in a year.

⬩➤ Required Documents for a Tourist Visa

    (Apply ~3 weeks in advance):

    1. Proof of funds in a bank account (approx. 20,000 – 30,000 THB).
    2. Flight Itinerary (confirmed ticket purchase not strictly required, but flight details are needed).
    3. Proof of accommodation.
    4. Invitation letter from a Thai citizen (if staying at a private Thai residence).

⬩➤ Combining “Visa Exemption” and “Tourist Visa” for Maximum Stay

For citizens eligible for Visa Exemption who wish to stay in Thailand longer, both options can be combined strategically using the following steps:

    1. Round 1 (Tourist Visa): Apply for a Tourist Visa from abroad. Receive 60 days + extend at Immigration for 30 days = 90 days (3 months) of legal stay.
    2. Round 2 (Visa Exemption): Once the 90 days expire, leave the country and re-enter using Visa Exemption. Receive 30 days + extend at Immigration for 30 days = Additional 60 days.
    3. Round 3 (Final Visa Exemption): Leave the country and re-enter using Visa Exemption once more = Additional 30 days.

Total duration: This strategy allows for a cumulative stay in Thailand of 150 – 180 days (approx. 5 – 6 months), which is the maximum achievable period under tourist-type entries.

(Caution: A Visa Exemption cannot be converted into a Tourist Visa within Thailand. To use a Tourist Visa, it must be applied for prior to entering the country.)

⬩➤ Required Documents for Extension of Stay at Immigration

The documents required to extend a stay at an Immigration office are identical for both Visa Exemption and Tourist Visa entries:

    • Extension Fee: 1,900 THB.
    • Form TM.7 (ตม. 7): Downloadable from the Immigration website or available at the office.
    • Passport Photo: 2-inch size, 1 photo (taken within the last 6 months).
    • Passport: Original passport along with photocopies and the entry stamp page.
    • Notification of Residence (TM.30): Proof that the accommodation provider (host or hotel) has reported the foreigner’s stay to Immigration. Failure to report carries a fine of 800 – 2,000 THB. The extension must be submitted to the local Immigration office matching the address reported on the TM.30.
    • TM6 / TDAC: The entry registration details required prior to entering Thailand.
