⬩➤ 2. ขออยู่ต่อ (Extension of Stay) ที่ ตม.
(Border Run)
(Tourist Visa – TR)
Non-Immigrant O (Non-O)

How to Stay in Thailand for 31–90 Days When Visa Exemption Is Only 30 Days
For anyone who bought flight tickets in advance to stay in Thailand for 31 to 90 days, but then faced the new rule reducing visa-free stay to just 30 days (effective September 15, 2026 onwards)—meaning anyone entering Thailand from this date will get a 30-day entry stamp:
If your flight ticket exceeds the new 30-day limit, here is how you can handle it based on the number of days you plan to stay:
Summary
| Want to stay in Thailand | Options |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 days | Visa exemption for 30 days (Check the list of eligible countries here) |
| 31–60 days | • 30-day visa exemption + extend your stay for another 30 days (THB 1,900) OR • Leave Thailand and re-enter for another 30 days (Be careful! Entering Thailand more than 2 times per year may result in being denied entry) OR • Tourist Visa for 60 days (THB 1,500) |
| 61–90 days | • Tourist Visa for 60 days (THB 1,500) + extend your stay for another 30 days (THB 1,900) OR • Non-O Visa (Such as spouse or retirement), allowing a 90-day stay, if eligible (THB 3,000) |
⬩➤ 1. Change Your Flight Ticket
This option is best for people staying just a few days extra. For example, if you originally planned to arrive on October 1 and return on November 1, many think this is 30 days, but it is actually 31–32 days.
- Solution: Change your return flight date so the stay does not exceed 30 days (for example, change the return date to October 29 or 30).
- Pros/Cons: Although you may have to pay a change fee or ticket price difference, it is the most convenient option and requires no paperwork.
- Warning: Never overstay your visa. Even overstaying by just 1 day will ruin your immigration record and result in a fine. It may also cause immigration officers to deny your entry on future visits because strict enforcement is currently in place.
⬩➤ 2. Apply for an Extension of Stay at Immigration
For those who bought tickets for a stay between 31 and 60 days:
- Solution: Enter Thailand using the initial 30-day visa-free entry. Then, go to an Immigration Office in Thailand to apply for an “Extension of Stay” for another 30 days, making your total stay 60 days.
- Process & Cost: Pay a 1,900 THB fee and fill out the TM.7 form.
- Limitation: You can only extend a tourist stay once per entry; you cannot keep extending it continuously.
3. Border Runs or Applying for a Visa Before Entering Thailand
If you plan to stay longer than 2 months (61–90 days), consider one of these three options:
⬩➤ Option 3.1: Leave to a Neighboring Country and Re-enter (Border Run)
- Process: Enter Thailand visa-free for 30 days + apply for a 30-day extension at Immigration (total 60 days). Then, travel out to a neighboring country and re-enter Thailand to get a new 30-day visa-free stamp (total 90 days).
- Important Warning: Visa-free entries are limited to 2 times per calendar year. Once you have used up your days, on this second entry, Immigration law allows you to request an extension of only 7 days. After that, you must apply for a visa in advance if you wish to return to Thailand.
⬩➤ Option 3.2: Apply for a Tourist Visa (TR)
- Eligibility: Best for general tourists or individuals dating a Thai national without legal marriage status.
- Permissions: Gives you 60 days right from the start, and you can extend it at an Immigration office in Thailand for another 30 days (total 90 days).
- How to Apply: Must be applied for online in advance before traveling via the official Thai E-Visa website through the Thai Embassy in your home country (cannot be done inside Thailand).
- Advantage: Does not use up your visa-free entry quota, keeping it available for future trips
⬩➤ Option 3.3: Apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa (Non-O)
- Eligibility: Only suitable for those legally married to a Thai citizen or retirees aged 50 and above.
- Permissions: Allows you to stay for 90 straight days right from the beginning without needing to apply for extensions at Immigration.
- Cost Efficiency: Cheaper than getting a Tourist Visa and extending it later (Non-O fee is under 3,000 THB, whereas a Tourist Visa plus extension costs over 3,000 THB).
- Conditions: Apply online via the Thai E-Visa system using bank account proof from your home country (800,000 THB for retirement / 400,000 THB for marriage). If staying for only up to 90 days, opening a Thai bank account is not required.
Additional Advice: If you need to apply for a visa (Tourist Visa or Non-O), submit your online application as soon as possible because embassies usually prioritize processing applications for people with upcoming travel dates.
