การจดทะเบียนสมรส ไม่สามารถจดซ้ำซ้อนในหลายประเทศได้ เมื่อจดแล้วจะถือว่ามีสถานะสมรสตามกฎหมายเรียบร้อย และ ไม่จำเป็นต้องไปจดใหม่ในประเทศอื่น
สิ่งที่สามารถทำได้คือ ขอใบรับรองการจดทะเบียนสมรส เพื่อนำไปใช้แทนทะเบียนสมรสของประเทศนั้น ๆ
- กรณีจดต่างประเทศ แล้วต้องการแจ้งสถานะสมรสในประเทศไทยด้วย: เรียกว่า ทะเบียนฐานะครอบครัว (คร.22)
- กรณีจดในประเทศไทย แล้วต้องการแจ้งสถานะสมรสในต่างประเทศด้วย: ชื่อเรียกของเอกสารจะต่างกันไปตามกฎหมายของแต่ละประเทศ

- เดินทางไปต่างประเทศเพียงระยะสั้น ๆ สามารถขอ วีซ่าท่องเที่ยวหรือวีซ่าปกติ แทนได้ (ซึ่งมักผ่านง่ายขึ้นเมื่อมีสถานะสมรส)
- จดทะเบียนสมรสเพื่อใช้ ภายในประเทศไทยเท่านั้น เช่น ติดต่อธนาคาร หรือหน่วยงานรัฐไทยบางแห่ง
- หลายคู่เลือกทำเอกสารไว้ล่วงหน้า เพื่อ ไม่ต้องย้อนกลับมาดำเนินการใหม่ในอนาคต
หมายเหตุ: หากจดทะเบียนสมรสที่ประเทศไทย แล้วนำไปใช้ในต่างประเทศ จะ ง่ายกว่า การไปจดทะเบียนสมรสที่ต่างประเทศตั้งแต่แรก

A marriage can only be registered once. Once legally registered, the marital status is valid and recognized, and there is no need to re-register the marriage in another country.
What can be done instead is to obtain a Marriage Registration Certificate to be used in place of a local marriage certificate in another country.
- If the marriage is registered abroad and you wish to notify your marital status in Thailand, it is called the Family Status Registration Certificate (Khor Ror 22)
- If the marriage is registered in Thailand and you wish to notify your marital status abroad, the name of the document varies depending on the laws of each country.

When You Should Obtain a Foreign Marriage Registration Certificate
This is recommended for couples who plan to use their marital status seriously in another country, such as:
- Without this process, you may only be entitled to assets located in Thailand that belong to your foreign spouse
- Planning to live abroad with your spouse without applying for a visa every time
- Using the marriage registration to apply for a spouse visa / family visa
- Claiming spousal rights and benefits abroad, such as property rights, pensions, or other legal benefits

- You plan to live only in Thailand and do not intend to stay in your spouse’s country
- You may travel abroad only for short periods, in which case a regular visa is sufficient (and often easier to obtain when married)
- The marriage registration is intended for use within Thailand only, such as for certain banks or Thai government agencies
- Many couples still choose to prepare the documents in advance to avoid repeating the process later
Note: Registering your marriage in Thailand and then using the Thai marriage documents abroad is generally easier than registering the marriage abroad first.
